01:21 am - Barbarian Group's Butterflies...
Posting this tons of places because, well, I love it and promoting arts is a good thing.

Butterflies, installed, originally uploaded by flight404.

Amazing, life mimicking generative/algorithmic art installation at the McLeod Residence by the Barbarian Group. I want some of those prints! Been following the development via my flickr contact Flight404. Please do check it out.

03:17 am - after a long hiatus

I figure I might actually post on occasion here again.  Though being that I am playing with about 8 other blogging type webapps, maybe not so much.  But I've decided to private all the ancient posts that are completely irrelevent to my life as I attempt the born again LJ activity.  I left a handful that I am somewhat fond of.

If you want to find me out there on those other things, check my ClaimID links, but here is a few:

http://clickykbd.tumblr.com (automatic link and media logging)
http://ryangallagher.tumblr.com (manual "special interest" logging)
http://clickykbd.vox.com (checking it out)
http://www.vimeo.com/clickykbd/ (not too into video, but love this site)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/clickykbd/ (where I spend most of my time)

FYI I've also ditched my self-hosted blog, formerly http://blog.ryangallagher.name, which, i decided to use as a redirect to whatever service I happen to be playing with at the moment (currently Vox).

Ohh and of course, always very active with ye old camera tossing community and the blog:

As far as what I have been up too... currently still doing theatre production for a living, and preparing a photography workshop to be given in Italy in late October.  Also playing with http://www.processing.org finally!  I can't believe I waited so long, it's been on my todolist for years.  Speaking of todolists, http://www.todoist.com.

Haven't been posting because things have been crazy. Here's a hint why if you weren't already aware of what I have been up to, wish I could drag all my friends to the show with me, but Germany is pretty far away, and very very cold right now.

11:40 pm - high on life...
Long post...

Someone remind me to kiss that black cat that was sitting on my stoop, I petted him as I left the house this evening.

Oh my god... I mean i'm speechless. For those of you who know me you are aware that my life was recently thrown out of balance by a recent departure from my last place of employment. It's been just over a week now. I have a whopping 26 dollars to my name at this point, but wow!, I could not be happier!! The world is a strange but beautiful place!

I've always been a proponent of "things will work themselves out somehow" but i never expected such a rapid response. It seems that as soon as I made my mind up that I was going to make a serious attempt to bid full time computer work goodbye and re-join the profession i love, theatre production, everything began to fall into place. If you are not aware I have a theatre degree and love design and production, even grunt stage work has a very satisfying ring to me. But over the past two and a half years I've been stuck in an office hammering out code for a underpaying under-appreciating company who's only perks were that the office was close to my house, some of my friends work there, and my manager was fairly flexible when it came to arrival time. That last perk i just mentioned however really seemed to piss off the owner and upper management which was their ONLY reason for letting me go on 29th. I'm not going to rant about that too much as it deserves an entire post, and this is a happy post! ;)

The crescendo begins on monday I call the Local IATSE 205 (Stagehands Union), whom i worked with for about a year during my last period of unemployment. I'm not expecting results immediately because the people have probably cycled alot and very few would remember me, and knowing the quality of your workmanship is critical to being placed high on the call list. But to my surprise after leaving the message with my information, I promptly get a call back within 10 minutes. It turns out the person doing the crewing now is Donnie, someone i worked closely with last time around, and whom happens to be dating someone else who knows me quite well, Melissa, whom i studied theatre with through college and even lived down the hall from in the dorm. He seems happy to hear from me and said he called Melissa with the "news" that i had called in. I didn't think it really "news worthy" but hell yeah, quite a response. And the world just shrank a bit.

It gets better...

So, today i got a message from Donnie saying i'd been placed on the call list for the load in for the National Instruments convention at the convention center (and the load-out). The call is a wopping 14 hour all day affair, which means lots of over time and potentially double time. Thank god, I'm so broke, and i certainly wasn't expecting to be on the first call available.

And yes, it gets better...

So i leave my house this evening, pet the black kitty cat whom i've never seen before, and head to the coffeeshop. I quickly get bored there and opt to join a couple acquaintances for some billiards down the street. I finish a beer and am thinking I should leave before spending any more money, but one more game of pool. I head to the bar for quarters, guess who is there. Donnie and Jessie from the union. I've never ever seen them there, and it's been over a year and a half since i've seen Jessie, over two for Donnie!! So as a professional decision, instead of quarters i get another beer and join them. We talk for a couple hours and a couple more beers, they relay to me that I should apply at the Paramount right now, because there is a position open that suits me.

But all in all, basically i've dropped right back into the theatre world where i left off over two years ago, within a matter of hours, with promise for even better work this time around, more in line with my interests even... which are lighting and rigging.

The chain of events and coincidences that lead up to this evening absolutely astound me.

After departing their company and returning to the coffeeshop, even though I was mostly by myself, I could not stop smiling, the world was hugging me and I was hugging it back. I made a wish upon a star, and even blew the crescent moon a kiss on the bike ride home.

EDIT: almost left this out...

So yeah, i can't afford my 825$/mo. rent even with the help of unemployment benefits. But I connected with my friend CC who owns a house in the hyde park area and has a NICE garage efficiency apartment (all bills paid) for 500$/mo. available right now (which I only discovered yesterday). And she 's willing to do month to month lease! Which is awesome considering the unknownable status of my location and employment at the moment.

A rapid fire journal entry because i realized i had wanted to share this site when i found it several weeks ago. Things have a way of seeming beautiful from extremely high altitude, from an imaging satellite for example.

I have countless desktop backgrounds in the works due to this fine source of inspirational high resolution images. I'll post a link to those at a later date.

11:30 pm - random harmony
<reflective-thought>
There is nothing quite as wonderful in this chaotic urban jungle as the rare experience of walking down a quiet street on a windy evening to find the street signs piping a multi-harmonic tune through their galvanized steel husks. Their perforated exterior acting as the stops on a flute. I find these moments of man-created structures interacting with natural forces in beautiful ways to be most uplifting. The natural phenomenon depends entirely on the existence of both the natural and the unnatural around us.

11:49 pm - update...
My life of late has involved various activities that I am suspicious all have something to do with avoiding the following: cleaning the house, doing laundry, going to the grocery store.

Saturday was a crazy busy day... I passively participated in a fashion/variety show at mojos that my friend Jason Austin threw. Mostly i just hung around the edges and watched the chaos. I did get to see Alejandro for a good bit that day, someone whom had vanished from the scene for a while, it was good to have him back. Unfortunately I didn't make it to the show early enough to witness my ex girlfriend, Jana, in the sexy librarian sketch hurling hardback books at the audience. I also got an unusual vibe from a performer at the show, Gabby, along the lines of "do i know you" or perhaps "i'd like to know you" but i didn't culminate that afternoon, although she has my email on the signup sheet for her mailing list, so who knows.

After the show at mojos I rode to a gallery opening in east austin where brian had his bike and some drawings on display. His first public showing. It was fun and the punk bands were enjoyable. The first act was cute. They were about 15 years old and their parents were in attendance taking pictures on the couch. A stagehand acquaintance of mine, Crow, had donated all the audio equipment for the event. They sang a song called "emo sucks" and seem to have a very good understanding of what is "good" punk versus this shit that is all over the place right now. "Ok Beth", the second punk act was actually really good, and i have encountered all their faces around the coffeehouse before. Had no idea they were a gaggle of musical talent before that. Fun. Small world syndrome also proven... I met a girl at the gallery... "Charity" whom turns out lived at House of Commons and knows Dave, the super guy whom jana is involved with currently.

After that show i returned to mojos, and another friend whom I hadn't seen in a while, Billy Cope, showed up and I had a wonderful conversation with him, Brian, and Brian's friend from new jersy... Dion. Billy wants to collaborate with me on something soon, but he didn't give me any details yet.

I'm generally very shy and quiet, the day as a whole took alot out of me socially... but it was all very nice. I even had a brief conversation with Renee at mojos this weekend, ran an art idea by her, she's fascinated me for a long time because of the degree to which she lives her life as one large artistic endeavor. But i've always been to shy to strike up conversations with her, even though I was at her birthday party! (weird)

But besides that crazy day, i've been keeping pretty quite, exploring new curiosities on the internet such as http://www.flickr.com, chatting with new online friends such as [info]label_this, mulling over math curiosities such as collatz conjecture, and brainstorming on a collaborative digital art idea that came to me recently.

12:47 am - grant options...
Does anyone know any really good sources for art/technology related grants (hopefully those geared towards combining the two). After today's tug-o-war between the owner of the company where i work and the vice-president/manager... with me as the ROPE... i'm tempted to dive headlong into one of my stack-o-ideas and write the whole private sector off for good. *sigh*

03:59 am - social software...
Well i finally took a moment to play with Orkut for a bit today. Many more of these and i'm going to have to start ignoring some (although i started ignoring friendster eons ago). Here's the ones i currently dabble with:

- friendster.com
- tribe.net
- orkut.com
- livejournal.com (of course)
and...
- craigslist.com (sorta fits the category)

So far i've met one person IRL due to one of these, and another person i met in real life first due to conversations along the lines of social software... and then connected up on several of them. Score: 1 for reality, 1 for software.

Are there any others worth playing with? Pretty sure those 4 are enough to keep my hands full for a while.

12:20 am - i did what?
This arrived in my inbox yesterday. Neato.

Dear Ryan Gallagher,

We are a group of researchers from Florida State University, conducting a study on the organizational structure of open source software development projects. The goals of this study are to understand more about how the developers are organized, how work assignments are made, and how any possible conflicts are resolved, in order to help open source leaders manage successful projects. To do so, we will interview project leaders regarding their experiences coordinating open source developers.

Your project, parchive, was selected for this study based on its inclusion on Sourceforge.net's "Top Forum Post Counts" page, meaning that it is an active, thriving project.

We would like to schedule a short 25-30 minute telephone interview with you, at your earliest convenience. To schedule an interview, please reply to this email and include your phone number(s), time zone, and a couple of good times to call. We can call anytime, but the best times are between 6:00 AM and 12:00 AM, Eastern Time (GMT -5:00), between March 1 and March 14, 2004. We can also call internationally if need be

All responses will only be used anonymously, and your phone number will only be used to call you, and not for any other purpose. We would appreciate a chance to talk to you about open source projects.

Thank you in advance for your participation,
Glen Sagers
Molly Wasko, PhD
Michael Dickey, PhD

UPDATE: wow. I just check. parchive is ranked 91st in forum posts. Guess that explains the inquiry. The forums don't seem that busy to me but then the project has been alive for several years now. We'd prob be way up there in downloads too but most of the clients are 3rd party, just the reference clients live at sourceforge.
